There is no evidence whatsoever that John Bonham played on HGM
other than Donovan's assertion.
Agreed--and now, in the transcription of the Uncut interview (see
quote below), Donovan has changed his story again, saying that it was
Bonham himself who claimed he was there! Nice move, Mr. Leitch: shift
the blame to a man who's been dead for nearly 30 years and can't
defend himself.
Many people have said over the years how important that session of
John
Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and me - and maybe Bonham, who said he was
there
- doing 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' was. I was developing a story-telling
thing,
Ironic that he says "I was developing a story-telling thing"... Erm,
as in making up stories about who played on your sessions?
JPJ's purported e-mail notwithstanding, I suppose it's _possible_
that Page came in after the fact and overdubbed another guitar--but,
as Steve writes, it just doesn't sound like him. And even if he did,
Donovan would still be guilty of inaccurately claiming that Jones and
Page were in the room at the same time and that, consequently, he was
some sort of catalyst for the forging of Led Zeppelin.
