I believe that until 1973, Zeppelin were a stronger live band. By 
stronger,
I don't mean they had better jamming skills --- I just believe that 
they
kept the energy level up for every song. Every song was played with 
tons of
ferocity, and even the acoustic songs are full of drama. The Dead's 
jamming
style was hypnotic, but I believe some of the non-jammed songs they 
did
left a little to be desired. Maybe it's because they played everything
lightly, but for some of those songs it just seems like they're half 
there.
Then again, before 1974(73?) they sounded pretty strong.
