Re: Genesis Update

Well in a museum you aim for several hundreds of years. We own encyclopaedia's from the 16th century. Your book will survive even if you handle it without gloves, but it will be bound to have little imperfections, there is grease on your skin all the time, for protection, and this will stain paper.

Ideally it should be stored in a place where temperature doesn't vary too much and when humidity is constant and not above 50%.

And of course if you don't want too much damage, don't handle it too often. And when you do put it on a cushion or something soft, to take the strain off the spine.

My French to English dictionary is literally falling to pieces, I don't care very much how I handle it, and it's really battered since I use it often. My most precious book is the Sketchbook published by Alan Lee with his sketches for the LOTR movies. It's not an expensive book, but it's so beautiful, I handle it with extreme care, though not with gloves ;) and actually don't want anyone else to handle it. It's even more precious to me since Alan signed it and sketched a dragon in it for me. One of the best days of my life. When the house nearly burned down it was the only object I took with me, along with my external hard drive, just in case.

It all depends on why you bought it. I suppose I would only open this once a year, while listening to my favourite live concert or something.

How how long do you mean by "long time" more than my lifetime, my fruit of the loins' or ???

I mean, I want to be able to look thru this from time to time without feeling like I'm gonna give it some horrid disease. It is after all a book meant to be enjoyed no ? I'm certainly not gonna leave it out on the coffee table so just wondering, how is everyone else treating, going to be treating theirs ?

Oh boy. If I had spent that much money on a book I most certainly would use gloves. Well I work in a museum and have this branded in my brain. Conservation techniques and all. NEVER handle paper with bare hand if it's meant to be kept for a long time.
