Another fun packed edition of Mixer ramblings

1. I am going to write this starting now (Saturday 1:49 AM) and send
it
out sometime Sunday night or Monday morning.....Why? Because Sunday
night/Monday morning are when I normally send these things out.

2. From the horse's mouth- good posting. THANK YOU. It bugs the hell
out
of me that people read these books and say "Not MY Led Zeppelin, they
wouldn't do such a thing. They were a rock band with lots of cash and
lots
of groupies..... most of them did the same thing. No Cole's book isn't
100% accurate, but I think we were proven that in fact, there is a
lot of
truth to that book.

3. Overdubs on TSRTS- There is one obvious overduub on STH where you
hear
two Plant's at once..... one of his "ooooohhhhh baby baby" something
like
that....I think he might have blown the note and felt insecure about
it so
they overdubbed that just to make it sound better....one of those
things
you notice after listening to something too much...

4. As far as this whole what music is crap and what music is cool
discussion- here is my opinion- while a particular badn might not fit
your
taste, no band sucks, no band is crap, and I say this for every type
of
music. Music is music, everyone has their own tastes....and if the
music
is bringing enjoyment to either a small or large amount of people, it
is
serving it's purpose. If everyone liked the same music all the radio
stations would play the same music. And what would be the point opf
having
more then 3-4 stations? There are all kinds of choices in any given
radio market because each one has it's own audience....just because
someone doesn't like new U2 (myself included) doesn't mean there
aren't 20
million people who want to hear "Beautiful Day" or "Walk On". I'll
settle
for "Sunday Bloody Sunday" or "New Years Day" myself.

It may suprise some of you that there are a LOT of people who HATE Led
Zeppelin and say that they suck. Some hate them for how they stole
music.
Many people only know 3-4 songs by them. The only song that everyone
knows
and most people love iso STH....other tehn that, many people don't
like
Plant's shrill vocals (I think they're great but it is
understandable) and
many people feel that Jimmy Page always sounds like Jimmy Page and
isn't
very creative. I disagree.....but they are vaalid arguements- people
just
don't always like his style. And there are still a lot of people that
love
Zeppelin too....personal taste differs with everyone. We are all here
because we love Zeppelin, and I am SURE that each and every one of us
like
Zeppelin's music for completely different reasons. And that is why we
can't agree about other music, we all have different tastes, so
really,
we're wasting time discussing who sucks and who doesn't.....

5. And continuing on with that topic, as I read more emails about all
these bands and opinions- one thing I've noticed, is most of the time
that
a band is around for a while, their earlier stuff ends up being a lot
better then their later stuff. While I agree that this is true for the
Dead, u2, and even Zeppelin, I actually prefer Metallica's later stuff
over their earlier stuff. It was their later stuff that made me
appreciate
their earlier stuff. And REM? While, yeah, their earlier stuff is
better
then the crap they're comng out with now, BUT I think Monster, while a
simple album, it absolutely rocked....still love this album. It was
one of
the first CD's I bought (after the two Zep box sets of course) after
I had
all my CD's stolen a year ago because it just is a killer album. My
second
favorite REM album would be Green..... back to the dead, I really
0only
like the bluesey pigpen era stuff.....but that's just my taste. Live
on
the other hand, I can watch any member of the dead perform live and
enjoy
the show, but listening to it recorded just doesn't do much for me.
But I
still respect them for their impact on both music and culture.

And Aerosmith? I think "Just Push Play" is one of the better albums
these
guys have released....still not better then any of the earlier stuff
, but
hell, not as many love balladss on there, although there are some crap
songs, Jaded is a lot better then a lot of the stuff they've done, the
title track just rocks..... But I will take "Train...." into "Seasons
of
Wither" anyday over modern stuff, the last really outstanding album
they
did was Permanent Vacation.......but even though I am not a fan of a
lot
of their recent stuff, I say them in Old Orchard Beach Maine (town
next to
where I am from) in August of 1994 with COllective Soul opening, it
was
my first concert ever, and they put on one hell of a show. It's the
difference between the strung out Aerosmith that was playing in 1984
which
one FBOer pointed out that it sucked and the 1994 straitened out
Aerosmith. WHile they might not know how to write music well anymore,
their live show is incredible, they even played part of D&C that
night.......and that blew me away.....

And Floyd? Never disliked htem, but never completely got into
anything by
them until recently. I think their best work was "The Wall",
ironically
not one of their earlier albums, although the Syd Barrett stuff is
incredible. "The Wall" has mellow stuff to songs that just rock, mixed
with the always well done Gilmoure guitar solos, and whether alone or
with
the movie, the music has so many great messages behind it and really
makes
you think.....different people will say that about all PF, but I
think the
Wall stands out above everyhting. The Division Bell is pretty cool,
but
without Waters Floyd isn't quite the same....

And Rush- operall, I can't stand them.....it's not Geddy Lee, I like
his
recent solo stuff actually......but for some reason most Rush does
not do
a thing for me. Except for their debut album- this thing just kicks
ass.....and it's not because originally it was engineered by Dave
McLaughlin, my Audio Engineering teacher (not the remastered
version), but
because the album rocks 30 times harder then Rush ever did after
that....I
thought it was pretty cool when I found out that the only Rush album I
liked was engineered by a teacher of mine......

And back to Aerosmith- never realized they did a cover until I read
the
review of how much someone thought their much their version of "Think
About It" sucked..... I gave it a listen.....well actually, played it
on
the air so I could listen to it (the miracle of radio) and I was
pretty
impressed.....

6. I think the person on this list who I remember the furthest back
was
GaryZepHead.... I remember him posting to the old AOL Zeppelin message
board back when AOL was not connected to the internet...... man that
was a
LONG time ago......, back when I was known as the Zepmeister......and
it's
weird seeing a name of at least one other person other then myself
who is
THAT much of an internet geek :)

7. Session musicians played on the original Aerosmith Train? What
about
Seasons of Wither? Those two songs are two of my favorite Aerosmith
songs
of all time and that dissapointed me that Train is session morons....

8. Timothy McVeigh is still dead.

9. Now as I type this one, the time is now 3:38 AM on Monday, and I
am at
work. I am listening to The Travelling Wilbury's "She's My Baby" with
a
killer solo from Gary Moore, and just got done listening to U2's
latest....Elevation......even after what I said Saturday morning at
the
beginning of this posting, I just realized that Elevation is growing
on
me. I still hate "Beautiful Day" though....

10. Zeppelin songs played on WKIT (www.zoneradio.com/wkit) on my
overnight
shifts this weekend: (shameless plug) The Lemon Song, Stairway to
Heaven
(requested by a little girl who delivers papers, couldn't turn a
young kid
down even if it is STH), followed by "Taures" by Spirit (the
inspiration
for STH), Out On The Tiles, OTHAFA, Friends/Celebration Day, JPJ's
"Snake
Eyes" (for an FBO'er listening online), The Battle of Evermore, Your
Time
Is Gonna Come, Carouselambra, For Your Life, and I will be playing
"Good
Times Bad Times" shortly before 5:00 this morning.
