Scholar-Athlete Award |
In the spring of 1987, shortly after the untimely death of Coach Woody Hayes, many community leaders talked about the contributions of Coach Hayes that went beyond his commitment to football. Many felt that there should be a living memorial to the coach's dedication to excellence and the community.
The University Sertoma Club took that challenge and created the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Award, and on January 15, 1988, presented the first awards as a living memorial to Coach Woody Hayes. Known as the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Awards, each year an outstanding man and woman from each of the collegiate divisions is recognized for their demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, and community service. In the 14 years of the award program, the 84 winners hold a combined grade point average of 3.84 with more than 1100 "all-something" titles, ranging from All-Conference to All-American in 13 different sports and more than a thousand community organizations across the country have been beneficiaries of them.
The proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will increase the University & Northwest Sertoma’s ability to assist community groups including The Childhood League, The Columbus Speech and Hearing Center, The Audio Oral Children’s Center and The Clintonville Community Resource Center.
