El Franko,
Well, I just listened to the 1988 MTV interview in Arizona (since I
had a copy of it courtesy of you), and it turns out Jimmy doesn't say,
"You'd have to ask Robert." Aw, dayum.
But I had so much fun listening to the interview, I decided I'd
summarize some of his main points when faced with the Zeppelin-related
questions. And Nigel Tufnel even makes an appearance!
- Jimmy says it's gotten too expensive to throw TVs out of hotel room
windows these days.
- Jimmy deals with the Zeppelin legacy by playing it onstage, since he
wrote them at all, and slightly rearranging them to surprise people.
- The only rearrangement of "Stairway to Heaven" is now it's an instrumental.
- Jimmy sidesteps answering how he personally feels about Robert's
career; he says he can't be bothered worrying about it.
- Jimmy doesn't say how he feels about Robert's Coke commercial but
says his friends know that Led Zeppelin never sold out but Robert has.
He reiterates that he's happy with the way he's doing things and can't
be bothered worrying about how Robert does things.
- Jimmy says he's not thinking about a Led Zeppelin reunion except
only to answer that question every three days when he's asked. There
are no plans for a Zeppelin reunion. At all. At the moment. Not that
that means never. I don't want to go into it. (Missed opportunity.
That's precisely where he should have said, "You'd have to ask
Robert.")
- Jimmy says there's no comparison being onstage solo to with Led
Zeppelin since the past is the past. Still, the past relates to the
future. Once the past passes it relates to the future. History-wise,
you know. He plays for now. It's always now. Hmmm, maybe Nigel Tufnel
would care to take over and explain it for me because I'm not quite
sure I understand.
- Jimmy says he's under pressure from himself to get better every
night. Got to admit it's getting better. It's getting better all the
time.
- Jimmy says he's gone back to basics with this album but not
everybody has understood what he's doing. He says his next album will
be totally different but will still have him playing guitar.
- Jimmy says he's not going to play a part in Pamela Des Barres' movie.
