Yeah, I'm with Steve Z on the "mixed review" for TSRTS CD. The cuts in the
various songs are inexplicable to me, and frankly a real bummer. Especially
"WLL"-- this version lops off my absolute favorite bit of funky riffing from
Page, which I'd grown RATHER fond of over the last 31 years! (There's also a
cut in "Dazed" I haven't heard discussed yet.) As many have pointed out, the
soundtrack and the movie didn't match in '76, and they don't match NOW,
either. So what's the point of the soundtrack edits? And they are GLARING,
too! I'm sure there's some "reasonable" explanation for what they did, but
honestly, I don't want to hear it. And I don't wanna hear the new, edited
"WLL" either. So there.
On the plus-side? I dig the sound, I appreciate the additional songs, and
"Celebration Day" is superb.
Regarding the movie itself, I'll say it again, folks: I think it's a REAL
shame that they weren't able to make changes to the original film. They
could have improved it so, so much. "Legal reasons," whatever-- just sounds
like corporate bullshit to me. And whoever's responsible for it is a fucking
moron, in my book. Excuse me, but this wasn't "Gone With the Wind" or
"Citizen Kane." They had a great opportunity there, and they squandered it.
End of fucking story.
Look, I AM grateful for the improvements to the film and the soundtrack. I
don't mean to sound like a curmudgeon here. It is BECAUSE I feel so
passionate about this stuff that I am obliged to criticize. And as a
dedicated, hard-core fan of the band for more than 30 years, I also feel
that my opinion does matter.
Love ya,
Josh

Subject: Re: Re: comments Mothership and Song Remains the Same
I went to Circuit City in Culver City (Los Angeles) to get the CD yesterday,
and they had plenty in stock, as well as both the regular & Collector's
DVD's. I had already ordered the collector's DVD from Amazon, so I didn't
get that. The CD was on sale for $15.99.
I've only listened to it once, and I have mixed reviews. Overall, the sound
is great, but one thing I really didn't like is the chorus effect on Jimmy's
guitar in Stairway. Completely unnecessary. Also, I don't get the edits
from the movie that were not on the original soundtrack (No Quarter, Whole
Lotta Love). The film and the soundtrack were different 30 years ago, they
could still have been different this time. In fact, they ARE still
different, as the soundtrack has the complete Heartbreaker, and doesn't have
that nasty cut in Rain Song. I understand the reasons why they couldn't fix
things in the movie, as they couldn't do re-edits for legal reasons, but the
soundtrack had no such restrictions.
Otherwise, having the new songs on there is fantastic, and except for Black
Dog, which also shouldn't have been the edited version, they sound great.
So this release is very nice, but unfortunately, has its flaws too.
My first look at the new film will probably be on the big screen next Tues.
Sure to bring back lots of midnight movie memories!
Cheers,
Steve Z
