Re: Turntable repair/replacement? (NZC)

Hi John,

I recently took the plunge back into the world of vinyl and I'm quite happy about it.

When I was trying to decide whether or not to get back into vinyl, I dug out my old Technics linear-tracking tt stored in a box since I don't know when. Immediately on trying to play it, the belt broke. I found an electronics shop around that stocked spare belts for about $5. It was very easy to replace. I eventually decided to pick up an entry-level audiophile class tt but even the old one sounded pretty good.

If you have any other questions about it, I strongly suggest some of the following forums. These are all free, but before asking questions, use their search engines because your questions have all come up countless times and the answers are all pretty well there. However, don't be shy about asking if you can't find anything specific.

You will run into some people who will tell you not to bother with anything under a $1000, etc. However, you'll also get some good advice. There also seem to be a few "snobs" who look down their noses at anything to do with Technics. Just ignore them.

As for cheap turntables, yes there are quite a few. Some of them are not bad. On these forums most people will tend to tell you to buy used as you can get more tt for your money, but I personally wasn't comfortable going that route. Some are.

What I can tell you is that once you get into this hobby, it can really open your eyes about the sound limitations of CDs.

Good luck!
Steve.
