Turntable repair/replacement? (NZC)

I don't often play vinyl anymore - the wife has all manner of junk piled up in front of my LPs. But while doing the Christmas decorating, my daughter and I got to spinning some records. Made it through all four sides of the American Graffitti soundtrack, The Firm debut, and side one of The Honeydrippers, whereupon the needle didn't return at the end. And now, when I attempt to cue up a record, nothing. The unit is still powered up, and if I place the needle it on the record and manually spin it, it plays through the speakers.

It's a fifteen-yr-old Technics, nothing special. Can anyone answer me these questions three:

1. It's a belt drive. Anyone ever crack one of these things open and try messing with it?

2. Can any New York City-area FBOers recommend a reputable and inexpensive repair shop? It's not a high-end unit, I don't want to spend a fortune fixing it. Or...

3. Is there a reasonably-priced turntable sold anymore? I'm playing my own beat-up LPs from the 70s and junk I find at yard sales, so I'm not going to spring for a high-end audiophile piece of machinery.

Tiny bit of Zeppelin content: Anyone catch the '50 Greatest Moments in Madison Square Garden History'? It was nice to see the boys recognized, even if it was only #35. The bit on the show was nothing special - couple of clips of TSRTS, some 1/2 celebs like Bababooey and man-on-the-street nobodies talking about how great Zep was.
