For me there are 3 things that set Zeppelin apart from all the rest and really
are the foundation of why I love this band:
1.) Zep refused to settle into any one particular musical direction and
constantly reinvented themselves. Each album was a complete departure from
every other. To truly appreciate the genius of Zep, one needs to look at their
entire body of work collectively.
2.) I love the fact that as a live band they were not technically precise and
allowed the music to grow beyond the recorded statement. They never allowed
themselves to be tied down to what they committed to tape in the studio. Live,
they opened up each song to a whole new world of exploration.
3.) Led Zeppelin music is not something to be listened to, it is something to
be experienced. To me listening to Zep is like being under the influence of
some hypnotic drug. No matter what mood or frame of mind I'm in, I can listen
to Zeppelin and this music will completely reframe my entire state of being. I
don't know how else to describe it, but there is no other music that affects me
in this way.
