Gov't Mule themselves played MD earlier this year. According to the guy who
ran their website, it was called on the spur of the moment as the song to
come out of the drum solo, taking everyone else in the band by surprise. A
little raggedy with no rehearsal, but fun.
Go ahead and crucify me, but I thought MD was usually downright boring. The
only version I really like is 9/29/71. Don't get me wrong, Bonzo was one of
the greatest drummers ever, but in the context of interacting with other
musicians.
As for Matt Abts, he's still my choice for a reunited Zeppelin. Chops and
taste galore, both in ensemble and solo situations. Matt is simply
incredible and I heartily recommend anyone see him, particularly with the
Mule.
To atone for carrying on about Gov't Mule, once again I offer B&P of a
compilation I put together awhile back of their covers of Zep songs. More
accurately, most of them are songs Zep themselves covered, but who's keeping
score. Sorry, MD isn't on there, the disc was put together long before that
show. Contact me for details.
Pat, in reward for your good taste, get in touch and I'll hook you up with
the Mule show with MD.
