The European Music Awards replay tomorrow afternoon (Saturday)
1:30-4:00pm CST. (That would be 2:30-5:00 EST) Going to try to remember
to put a tape in--problem with the digital box is that it can't be set to
change channels the way our old cable boxes could. So they doubled our
channels and lowered the price(!), but gave us less convenience for
taping.
MTV2 is one of the channels I can't get except through the digital box.
Sam writes:
"The problem with that is that the younger generation doesn't realize
that
these bands are covering stuff that's already been out and in much better
versions. There were plenty of times when I used to work in a video store
that I'd play "No Quarter" and I always had teenagers bitching about
these
old guys ripping off the Puff Daddy song and how much their version
sucked
(Kashmir). The idea of just sampling has completely gone away. Now it's
the
entire song structure and melody intact and a few lyrics are changed, and
maybe some guy will come out at the bridge and rap a while or Gwen
Stefani
will make a guest appearance."
Actually, when the younger generation get a little older, they do grasp
the concept of covering older music. I have played Kashmir and then the
Page/Puff Daddy thing for my second-year university students (it's a
Humanities course, I've been teaching a long time, so I can always figure
out a rationale). I find that they know Led Zeppelin, and appreciate
their music at least as a part of their cultural heritage (and plenty of
them just groove to it). What Sam is overhearing is probably the
conversation of kids too young to be interested in the history of
_anything_.
