Dead wrong. If it was the equipment at fault, you wouldn't be able to hear
the bass on the bootlegs either.
For the Playhouse Theatre June 27, '69 session, all anyone needs to do is
compare the official version with one of the better boots/tapes, such as
White Summer or the recent BBC Transcription series "Rock Hour." Listen to
both without making any adjustments in EQ. The official version doesn't
have the depth of the boots, and sounds much more compressed. That
thunderous, ass-kicking combination of Jones' bass and Bonham's bass drum
is reduced to a relative whimper. Why? This particular session is the
best recorded live Zeppelin I've ever heard, so why make it sound thinner?
Obviously John Paul Jones wasn't in the booth with Page & Astley at the
time.

Agreed, at least on that particular Playhouse Theatre session. All of the
other sessions sound better (to my ears), but I don't think I'd say it
"sucks."
