"Power & Glory" Review

From: Susumu Omi <PXS02522@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Badge holders,
I spent my holiday in listening to Power & Glory (20CD, The
Diagram of Led Zeppelin), which contains all 6 shows at the Forum,
Inglewood. Here is the review. Hope you enjoy this!

*******6/21/77(1st night)*******
  Disc 1(TDOLZ-509701): 68:15
TSRTS, SA, NFBM, OtHaF, SIBLY, NQ
  Disc 2(TDOLZ-509702): 71:31
    TYG, TBoE, GtC, BCW, BYA-Stomp, WS-BMS-Kashmir, OotT-MD
  Disc 3(TDOLZ-509703): 55:41
HB, Guitar Solo, ALS, StH, WLL-R&R

Source tape is identical to that of all boots previuosly
released, such as "Listen to This, Eddie"(2LP, RSR-202),
"Listen to This Eddie(Part1, 2, 3)"(3CD, SIRA-14/15/16), "On
the Whispering Wind"(2CD, TNT-910114/5), "A Week for
Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19), "Listen to This Eddie-Master"
(3CD, SIRA-161/62/63), and "Remaster Version-Listen to This
Eddie"(3CD, JR-06/07/08). Among these previouly released boots,
"Listen to This Eddie-Master"(3CD, SIRA-161/62/63) and
"Remaster Version-Listen to This Eddie"(3CD, JR-06/07/08) are
the best in both sound quality and completeness. (For those who
likes strongly bass enhanced version, "A Week for Badgeholders"
is also fine. It's the matter of one's preference.)
But "Power & Glory" has the following advantage in
completeness over these previously released items.
  1. TYG is still incomplete, but missing portion is approx. 1
     minute shorter than abovementioned boots.
  2. All other boots contains cut between Guitar solo and ALS,
     but P&G doesn't.
So P&G is the definitive boot of this show? Unfortunately, the
answer is negative. Sound quality of some portions, especially,
the beginning of OotT is a bit flat, and obviously inferior to
abovementioned 2 titles I listed, though I don't know why this
thing happened.
And for me, it's quite strange that no bootleg contains
complete TYG, in spite that this show was released for many
times. There is an alt source tape of this show and it does
contain the complete version. So the bootlegger should have put
this complete version as well as the bonus track. I thought
like that in the first place, but....

*******6/22/77(2nd night)*******
  Disc 4(TDOLZ-519701): 45:30
    TSRTS, SA, NFBM, IMToD, SIBLY
  Disc 5(TDOLZ-519702): 46:11
    NQ, TYG
  Disc 6(TDOLZ-519703): 61:39
    TBoE, GtC, BCW, BYA-Stomp, WS-BMS-Kashmir, OotT-MD
  Disc 7(TDOLZ-519704): 54:16
OtHaF, Guitar Solo, ALS, StH, WLL-R&R

Source tape is identical to that of previuosly released boots,
i.e. "A Week for Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19) and "One Day
After Eddie"(3CD, IM-054/55/56). Between the two, the former is
better in sound quality (Strictly speaking, the portion from
TSRTS to NQ on ODaE is better than the rest and this portion is
almost equivalent to AWfB in sound quality), while the latter
wins in completeness. (AWfB does not contain the first 85min of
the show.)
P&G listed TYG which was not on AWfB nor ODaE, but this TYG is
really from the previous night, which I mentioned above. So as
the result, this is the first boot release of the complete TYG
of 6/21, though the bootlegger wouldn't intend to do so. Among
the tape traders, this 'TYG-inserted' version of the source tape
is widely circurated, so the bootlegger might make this boot
directly from that version of source tape. But one thing I have
to point out is that the sound quality of the source tape among
the traders is MUCH better than that of P&G. When compared with
AWfB, P&G is almost equivalent. But regarding the portion from
TSRTS to NQ, ODaE is a little bit better and clearler. In terms
of completeness, P&G is almost equivalent to ODaE and contains
cut in Guitar solo, but other songs are complete and uncut.
As far as I know, there are 3 versions of source tapes of this
show, and one of them have the 'real' TYG from this show, though
sound quality is not so good, so maybe someday other bootleggers
will release upgraded version of this show, I suppose.

*******6/23/77(3rd night)*******
  Disc 8(TDOLZ-529701): 69:16
TSRTS, SA, NFBM, OtHaF, SIBLY, NQ
  Disc 9(TDOLZ-529702): 62:03
TYG, TBoE, GtC, BCW, BYA-Stomp, WS-BMS-Kashmir, TuF
  Disc 10(TDOLZ-529703): 63:11
OotT-MD, Guitar Solo, ALS, StH, WLL-R&R

Three types of source tapes are used on the previously released
boots, such as "For Badge Holders Only"(2LP, LZ-1234) + "For Badge
Holders Only(Part 2)"(2LP, LZ-7), "For Badge Holders Only"(3CD,
RW-3301/2/3), "A Week for Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19) from
Taranutra, "For Badge Holders Only"(3CD, ARMS-28/29/30) from ARMS,
"For Badgeholders Only"(3CD, BP-95007/8/9) from Balboa
Productions, and "For Budge Holders Only"(3CD, CSS-017A/B/C) from
Cobra.
P&G is very similar to Cobra release in terms of type of source
tape, sound quality, and location of cuts. Regarding the detailed
comparison beteen these boots in sound quality, cut, types of the
source tapes, please see the table below. Caps, A, B, and C
indicates the type of source tapes and the following numbers, 0,
1 and 2 indicates the number of the cut in the song. As you could
see in the table, P&G uses source C entirely, which means there
are so many cuts in songs. This boot seems to be made from the
source tape which at least one time copied onto video tapes, since
in the silent portion between the songs or during the accoustic
set, constant low noise is heard.(That's why I rated its shound
quality as 'A-'.)

*******6/25/77(4th night)*******
  Disc 11(TDOLZ-539701): 73:11
TSRTS, SA, NFBM, IMToD, SIBLY, NQ
  Disc 12(TDOLZ-539702): 62:52
TYG, TBoE, GtC, BCW, BYA-Stomp, WS-BMS-Kashmir, TuF
  Disc 13(TDOLZ-539703): 73:47
OotT-MD, Guitar Solo, ALS, StH, WLL-R&R

Source tape is identical to that of previuosly released boots,
i.e. "The Last LA Forum 6/25/77"(2CD, LA-1992-1)+"The Last LA
Forum 6/25,27/77"(2CD, LA-1992-2), "Battle of Evermore Part 1/2"
(2CD+2CD, BC-28-A/B/C/D", (and it's reissue called "Rip It Up"),
and "A Week for Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19). They are almost
equivalent in sound quality and completeness. Strictly speaking,
high frequency range is enhanced on "The Last LA Forum 6/25/77"
(2CD, LA-1992-1)+"The Last LA Forum 6/25,27/77"(2CD, LA-1992-2),
while middle range enhabnced on "Battle of Evermore Part 1/2"
(2CD+2CD, BC-28-A/B/C/D", and bass range enhanced on "A Week for
Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19).
Sound quality of P&G is very similar to that of "The Last LA
Forum 6/25/77"(2CD, LA-1992-1)+"The Last LA Forum 6/25,27/77"
(2CD, LA-1992-2), and high frequency range is very clear, but
bass is a bit weak. But P&G wins since it contains less hiss.
However, again this boot contains constant low video noise. To
make things worse, some tracking noise occued in the middle of
No Quarter. If it had not been for this problem, I would have
listed P&G as the best boot in sound quality.....
In terms of completeness, P&G is equivalent to all of the
abovementioned boots of this show, and all songs are complete
and uncut.

*******6/26/77(5th night)*******
  Disc 14(TDOLZ-549701): 73:08
TSRTS, SA, NFBM, OtHaF, SIBLY, NQ
  Disc 15(TDOLZ-549702): 65:23
TYG, TBoE, GtC, That's All Right, BCW, BYA-Stomp,
   WS-BMS-Kashmir, OotT-MD
  Disc 16(TDOLZ-549703): 52:13
Guitar Solo, ALS, StH, It'll Be Me

Only one type of source tape is used on the previuosly released
boots , i.e. "A Week for Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19) and
"Sundazed"(3CD, SIRA-203/4/5). Between the two, the latter is
better in sound quality, while they are almost equivalent in
completeness.
2 sources are used on P&G. The source which is used on the most
part of the show is identical to that of the previous releases, but
an alt. source is used for the first 4 minutes of TSRTS, which is
missing on the other source tape. (But I'm not sure if this first
half of TSRTS is really from this show, since I have no refenence.)
Regarding cuts, there are cuts in NQ, WS, MD and Guitar solo, but
all of the other boots of this show contained these cuts as well.
So as the conclusion, P&G wins for it's complete TSRTS. In terms of
sound quality, however, P&G is a bit inferior to "Sundazed" and
high frequency range is weak and not so clear. Moreover, big digi
- -noise is in the middle of Guitar solo. Sigh....

*******6/27/77(6th night)*******
  Disc 17(TDOLZ-559701): 40:26
    TSRTS, SA, NFBM, OtHaF, SIBLY
  Disc 18(TDOLZ-559702): 60:07
    NQ, TYG, TBoE, GtC
  Disc 19(TDOLZ-559703): 63:47
Going Down South, BCW, BYA-Stomp, Dancing Days,
   WS-BMS-Kashmir, TuF, OotT-MD
  Disc 20(TDOLZ-559704): 57:33
    Guitar Solo, ALS, StH, WLL-R&R

Only one type of source tape is used on the previuosly released
boots , i.e. "The Last LA Forum 6/25,27/77"(2CD, LA-1992-2), "A
Week for Badgeholders"(19CD, T19CD-1~19), (and its reissue called
"The Legedary End"(3CD, SIRA-206/7/8)), and "Farewell to L.A."(3CD,
RR-01/2/3). Among these, "Farewell to L.A."(3CD, RR-01/2/3) is the
best in completeness, while they are almost equivalent in sound
quality.
2 sources are used on P&G. The source which is used on the most
part of the show is identical to that of the previous releases, but
an alt. source is used for the chat of Robert between SIBLY and NQ,
which is missing on that source tapes. Regarding cuts, there is a
cut in ALS, which is also on FtLA, but all other songs are complete
and uncut. So as for the completeness, P&G is the best.
In terms of sound quality, P&G is almost equivalent to FtLA, but
again contains constant video noise, which is not on FtLA. So I
think FtLA wins.

*****************************
In conclusion:
Judging from adding alt source to make it as complete as possible,
obviously the bootlegger made their best to release the definitive
edition. But actually, this 20CD boxed set indicated that how
difficult to surpass previous releases in every respect.

Listening to all 20 discs required huge effort, but what makes me
surprise is that Zep actually played this 6 high-energy shows within
a week!! It's a miracle..
