Sorry, Pageboy - I'm not gonna be the one to crucify you, as I agree with
*almost* everything you said - though perhaps some of it was said a little
stridently.
I also understand where Tom Flannery was coming from in his reply though -
alot of people simply can't afford high end equipment. However, the one
thing that any tape trader MUST do, and many do not (this is a pet peeve of
mine) is dub tapes with adequately high levels. The best way to combat hiss
and generational quality decline is to record with nice hot levels -
obviously you don't want to peg the meters and cause distortion, but a
high-bias tape can take a LOT of signal before it distorts, and I like my
tapes nice and hot. So don't be afraid of the +3 to 4 db range when you're
dubbing!
For some handy info on the do's & don'ts of tape trading in those "elitist"
circles, I refer you to Jon Hathaway's excellent article "Building A
Collection Of Underground Recordings," in Proximity #26. Email me for
details if you're interested.
Cheers,
Mr. "yes I have two Naks" Prox
PS: I am also of the opinion that hoarders do not hoard their uncriculated
tapes because they don't want to trade with less educated traders than
themselves, but because they are ASSHOLES.
