In reply to this Ryan Carter character:
What Jeremy said is true. In fact versions of these songs have been
played and replayed by folk and blues artists alike. The earliest
"version" of Gallows Pole that I have found and actually have on record is
entitled "The Gallis Pole" and was recorded by Huddie "Led Belly"
Ledbetter in the early 1930's. The storyline and lyrics are strikingly
similar enough to convince me that this is the "original version of
Gallows Pole, unless anyone else has earlier recordings.
Also, Black Mountain Side was originally an instrumental entiled
"Black Water Side" and was recorded by folk guitarist Bert Jansch in 1965.
The version I have is nearly identical to the guitar part in Black
MOUNTAIN Side and is a pretty conclusive precurser.
If anyone knows anthing about earlier versions, please post them.
This is an intriguing issue.
