Actually, you're hearing tone, not volume. My advice on approximating
LZII on a tight budget- 1970's Fender Champ cranked to ten (on the
volume knob, 1-5 controls volume, and 5-10 just makes it more
distorted!). This small, one-speaker amp should cost you about $100-150
and provide some nifty analog distortion at the higher settings. To
really make it sizzle, plug in your Vox wah and push the pedal down to all
bass and leave it there. This amp is easy to find and versatile to boot.
Coincidentally, seems like Page didn't hold true to his LZII sound on the
71 BBC Whole Lotta Love. The guitar sounds weak and thin in the intro.
Have a rave-up,
Eric
