Hi all,
Jan van Oldenmark has graciously agreed to send me about 1.8 gigs
of bootleg MP3s so I could put them up on my fast internet server.
This will require some work on my part, as I will have to do
some drive repartitioning to have that much room avalable. Also
Jan has to burn the mp3 cds and send them to me which also takes
time and isn't free. Before embarking on this quest I would like
to get a feel as how many people would actually download and
listen to these bootlegs if I were to make them avalable? I
would especcially like to hear from people who are not trading
bootlegs right now for reasons like, need to buy a good deck,
tapes, spend time, etc, but would try it if it were as simple as
going on the web(ftp) and downloading a show.
For those of you who don't know mp3s are compressed sound files
with essentially CD quality. They are currently being traded on
the internet. All it takes is for someone to read in a CD,
compress it, and put it it for other people to download. Mp3s
don't loose any quality from their CD originals and are quite
small. For example the new stones album is 58 megs. The same
album in any other digital format like wav would take hundreds
of megabyes or maybe even a couple of gig. Check out
http://www.mp3.com for more info..
Obviously this is illegal and I am not condoing the practice of
distributing pirated records, but this seems like a good way to
distribute bootlegs.
