Hmm... 300-400, eh? difficult at best. The average Les Paul is in the
800 dollar range anyway.. though you could get the epiphone versions for
about that. Anyway, from everything I've read I gather that the sound
Page managed to get on II was more of a function of how he miked what he
was playing and what effects he was using.. he was a proponent of the
distant-mic theory of recording. Also from what I could tell he used a
lot of wah-wah and echo in the studio as well.. I'm no expert but if
you're looking to spend less than about a grand (guitar and amp) you're
not going to match item-for-item what Pagey used in studio. But for
starters, avoid the Fender Crapocaster if you're looking for early-Zep
sounds.. Gibson-styles, humbucker pickups, big ass stacks of speakers,
lots of effects pedals is what you want.
