Dear One,
Arrggghhh, such a romantic notion.
I think Jimmy plays it for other reasons.
Go back to the sources on this one. Who would have inspired the King to write
such an enduring melody? His mother had hoped one of her sons would be King
Arthur reborn, and I think Henry indeed had a brother named Arthur who died
around the age of twelve or so. So his mom spoiled the living daylights out of
him, messing up his attitude towards people in general and women in particular
for the rest of his life. Indeed, Henry's mother, Elizabeth of York died
shortly after giving birth to Henry's little sister. And in case none of you
noticed, Henry doesn't look anything like his dad. I think he might look more
like one of the castle guards. So either a sly reference to secret love either
by himself or his mom would be a more likely inspiration. Jimmy has taken the
song though and played it with the sense that he might have been present the
first time it was played. Jimmy plays the song as though he's wearing it. And
he wears the song like a piece of well-worn apparel that you won't part with,
like that flowered black Hawaiian shirt he used to wear until it fell apart.
Hinting that the Black Adder :> might have written it is like telling somebody
that the beginning of "Immigrant Song" was taken from the song "Bali High" in
the musical "South Pacific" (OOOps! Sorry about that :) )
"...We come from the land of the ice and snow..."
Sincerely,
Shar
