As one of the non-musicians on this list, I would like to say a big THANK
YOU to Bruno for defending our ability to appreciate music even if we can't
perform it. After all, what would performers do without an audience?
Music is not my talent in this lifetime. I am a writer. It would be absurd
for me to say that only other writers can read and understand my stories. I
want lots of people to be able to read and enjoy them--just like any other
artist, I seek to bring pleasure to a wide audience.
Furthermore, it is possible to appreciate technique even if you can't apply
it. I can teach students to understand the techniques used in prose and
poetry even if they themselves never write anything but letters and e-mail.
Art teachers can teach students to understand the techniques of painting,
sculpture, and other art forms.
Consider that most of us, grown up in the 20th century, have absorbed a
pretty good knowledge of film techniques--yet how many of us have ever
attempted to film anything more challenging than a family wedding?
I am slowly learning about musical techniques from posts to this list by
people who know much more than I do--I just wish I had more time to listen
with those posts in front of me. I feel secure discussing lyrics--I'm
comfortable with words--but I'm still learning about music. The more I
learn, the more I can understand and appreciate, though I will never play it.
