Eddie (?) put it very aptly. Sunday night was a fantastic show that had me
angry I didn't also go Saturday.
The band is fantastic. Read Jim Farber's review in the NY Daily News - they
are really spreading out now, taking songs in other directions. The live show
is way better than the record, much more raucous and less subdued; and I like
the record. Even before Robert said it, you can see he, and all of them, are
having a blast up there. As he put it, "It's great to be able to make friends
like this at this stage of one's life". His joy is infectious.
Robert reminded me of someone else I have come to love over the past ten years
- Johnny Cash. Besides the down-hominess and country of the music, the way he
has a bunch of brilliant musicians up there, has them all take center stage for
a while to shine, and acts almost as a master of ceremonies, bringing us music
we might never otherwise have heard. I mean, I want to go buy Darryl Scott and
Patty Griffin records.
All in all, a splendid show and a great evening. I wish I could go see him
again somewhere on this tour, and fervently hope they return.
