Just a quick review of Led Zepagain from last night. They played the Skye
Supper Club in Peoria, AZ,
and really tore it up. The setlist
resembled the 73/75 tours, more or less.
Rather than playing the bloated half-hour versions of No Quarter and
Dazed, they cut out the fat and hit the high points. The violin bow section
of Dazed was actually
better than the real thing, as it was more melodic and concise and never fell
apart into random noise. He?s really
got the technique down, and he knows what to leave out and leave in. The
guitar solo in NQ was modeled after the
version in TSRTS with many of Page?s licks reproduced note for note.
Vocals, keys, bass, and drums were all on the money, but
like the real thing, it was a guitar show.
The guitar solo in Stairway included all the usual Page
licks, and then continued on into improvised territory in a similar style. He
really sounds great and has all kinds of
technique. I?d emailed a request for
Achilles Last Stand, and when they lit into WLL, I was thinking, ?Hell, they?re
not gonna play it.? But after the theremin
section, they transitioned into ALS and played the majority of the tune before
transitioning back into WLL. Nicely
done; thanks, guys! After browsing some
setlists at their website, I get the impression that it?s not uncommon for them
to drop a different bonus tunes into that slot, but it was so slick it sounded
like
it was part of the routine. The whole
show was masterfully done. I had some musician friends there, and everyone
was
impressed. One guy's girlfriend was a big Zep fan and wasn't sure what
to expect, but when it was over, she gushed "That was awesome!" But then,
Jimmy Page gave them a thumbs up, so who else do they need to impress? By all
means see them if they are in your
area.
