Re: GTLO in Alantic City

Scott,

Led Zeppelin was basically an improvisational jam band in the studio as well.
You ever hear the out takes of the many different versions of songs and leads?
The bass and guitar lines in "The Lemon Song" are a good example of this.

Jimmy Page and co. were brilliant enough to decide which versions were the
best ones, which in turn ended up on the records.

So millions of people got to hear the songs deemed appropriate by Led
Zeppelin and that is the versions they became familiar with, overdubs, proper
tunings, pitch and accurate timing all intact. Something lacking in their live
performances especially from 1973 on.

As far as the cover band thing goes - a famous DJ once told me - "It's one
thing to hear Jimmy Page improv on his own songs, but it's another to hear Joe
Blow trying to play like Jimmy Page." It never quite has the impact of the
original master.

I would surmise from your post you also do not like classical music as that is
written out and is performed the way it's supposed to be.

To me, Led Zeppelin's studio recordings are akin to Stravinsky and Wagner, and
so well orchestrated as to be worthy of preservation in a live concert
situation for the masses to hear, just like Bach, Beethoven and other classical
masterpieces, albeit in a hard rock format.

During the course of a GTLO performance there are a few entirely
improvisational sections where the individual musicians "go off" the beaten
track and completely and totally recreate the live improv Zeppelin jams that
many people know and love. You must not have been listening/paying attention
then. Keep on appreciating and listening to the live Zeppelin bootlegs! Cheers!
