Re: 3-11-75 Long Beach Arena, California,up on Dime

I too have yet had a chance to give the whole thing a listen but have made it up to the beginning of NQ and so far, yes, Jonesy definitely stands out above the norm on this recording, both sound and performance wise. I gotta dig out the sud for this to compare as in this soundboard, Plant's voice is so hoarse it makes me cringe at times and errr ummm Jimmy sounds not quite there. Definitely a rought start to this show as R n R seems to be all over the place. Not much syncopation between the pistons on that one...timing belt must be slipping and one thing that grates on me as well is the obvious fast tape on this that I believe EV could at this point in time have easily corrected. I mean, there's already a fan speed corrected version out there that will probably soon be making the rounds but jeez louise a frickin freeware audio program can easily do it so why couldn't EV have taken the time to make it right ? I mean, totally left the door open for future definitive editions ( SPEED CORRECTED!) by either themselves or the myriads of other labels soon to follow this release.

Celebration Day finds them getting their groove and by OTHAFA they are definitely finding their zone and by the solo, you get that fine Jonesy Bonzo interplay that always amazes me and gives Jimmy such a frigging palate on which to paint his solo over. ( gotta admit though that having had TSRTS fan edition playing constantly lately the '73 versions are still da balls all )

I found TSRTS to be a strange listen...not only for the obvious sharpness but also for the strange jangly tone of Jimmy's 12 string...is that a harmonizer effect I hear on there or just some poorly tuned strings giving it that effect.

All in all though, despite anything I am trully enjoying this newly surfaced soundboard...I mean how can you not?!

More to come later... review wise that is.

As with many of these '75 soundboard recordings to surface, I find
myself thinking that the star of the show is John Paul Jones. I
haven't listened to the entire recording yet - just bits and pieces on
cheap Logitech desktop speakers, but Jonesy sounds awesome. Just zone
in on his bass playing in Over the Hills and Whole Lotta Love/The
Crunge for only two examples... incredible.
