Oddly enough, I have the "expanded fan edition" pretty much in permanent
rotation lately. It is amazing stuff no matter how you slice it or how
it was spliced together. Just goes to show that even in an average
show...they were an amazing force to be reckoned with. '73 was a balls
to the wall year for Zep if you ask me. Bombastic at best, crushing at
least and yes as you said, before the bloat. And Even the bloat wasn't
bad. It was still enveloped in some heavy melt your face shit. : )
All you need to do to convince anyone of Zep's mastery of catching you
off gaurd , scrambling your brains, and then letting you back down easy
is thwack on OTHAFA and watch them go thru an epiphany..... soft subtle
, then wham bam, slide into a solo that just puts the WHOLE band into a
frigging groove machine the likes of which threaten to disengage your
hip bones, the interplay between Page, Jones and Bonhams is something I
have yet to hear any other band replicate , then back to the whamming
and Bamming and finally...a outro that can only leave you guessing...
but you really oughta know...
That's it, early lunch with the volume at 38.5 ! ! !
