Gmail is free and has plain text mode.  I don' think there are ads in
it but I don't see my own posts to the list unless someone responds to
it and then they have probably edited out any extemporaneous stuff.
So if it can be confirmed that it works good, I have no problem
recommending it to anyone - it has a lot of great organizational
features with easily applied labels and such...

I switched to it rather than my personal email because it was simply
more reliable - my hosting service kept moving their servers and the
list would periodically get bounces that ended up unsubbing me!  None
of that since I went to gmail...
