WELLAND

Welland author Frank Reddon has struck a global chord with Led Zeppelin fans.

So much so, that his new book, Sonic Boom: The Impact of Led Zeppelin. Volume 1 – Break and Enter, has been getting rave reviews around the world.

Reddon received word this week that his self-published tribute to one of the biggest rock and roll acts in history has just found a permanent home in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s library, in Cleveland, Ohio.

“It’s really been something to stand back and watch,” Reddon, a gardener employed by the City of Welland, said about the book.

Sonic Boom was released Sept. 7, 2008 – the 40th anniversary of the band’s formation.

Reddon spent 12 years researching his subject and much longer than that collecting records and memorabilia associated with the group. He has contributed to Led Zeppelin books by other authors and is recognized as an expert in the British band’s earliest days.

The first library in the world to acquire Sonic Boom was the Gladsaxe Hovedbibliotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. Led Zeppelin played its first-ever gig at the Gladsaxe Teen Club there.

Sonic Boom has also been accepted into public libraries in Denver, Boston, Welland and Reddon’s native Fort Erie.

The book has also generated e-mail to www.enzepplopedia.com, the main point of purchase for Sonic Boom. Reddon is in the process of constructing a parallel website, learnaboutzep.com, as a teaching tool.

Led Zeppelin fans and aficionados from Slovenia to Japan have made inquiries since the book was launched last fall.

“It’s really just crazy,” he said. “It’s a dream come true already.”

Reddon is in the process of getting Sonic Boom: The Impact of Led Zeppelin, Volume 2 – You Shook U.S. to the printers. There are plans to go to a second printing with the first book in the trilogy.

The second book has been delayed largely because of the success of the first book. Reddon had planned to publish the second book this summer.

“I’ve spent countless hours discovering new information about my favourite band. I want nothing more than to share what I’ve learned with others.”

Reddon said the first book hit the streets at the right time, given the buzz over Led Zeppelin’s London reunion at O2 Arena in 2007. The show was held to aid the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund. Ertegun was founder of Atlantic Records.

“Things are moving along very well,” Reddon said.

He said the ongoing interest in Led Zeppelin four decades after the band’s start is a “phenomenon” that is hard to explain.

He hopes to take his knowledge of Led Zeppelin into the lecture halls at some point in the near future.
