What Led Zeppelin did so well was channel the emotion in the music of the
blues and create a completely different sound from what had been heard
before. They broke the blues down into its most basic components - the riff
and the chords. Their emotion didn't come from the singer's wail (oh boy,
how he could wail), but from the direct, punch-you-in-the-gut riffs that
underlie most good blues songs - electric blues especially. It was the angry
side of the blues, accentuated by the crunching distortion of Page's guitar.
Performers like Clapton and Richards had been using feedback and distortion
to create a slightly "dirty" tone, something that approximated the gritty
Chess blues recordings they used to spin on their dime store record players.
Page used distortion as a voice, a unique sound that evokes the emotion of
Howlin' Wolf's scratchy vocals.
A good quick read... glad some other folks besides us get it ! ; )
