Re: runnin' with the devil

how embarrassing I didn't notice this myself and make a point of pointing
it out

but yeah, it it ends on the minor 3rd and created that off kilter tension
as a pattern it is classic Jimmy Page kind of stuff

also Franny's off kilter, tension building stuff in Goofin Around went
directly into Jimmy's DNA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPJ-eG91aSg

of course there are other examples too

plenty on YouTube for people to explore if they wish

these records and many others were very precious to JP and his compadres
in the late 50's and early 60's

remember JP's quote that.." Rock-n-Roll was a dirty word back then..."

As one can imagine, there was probably more than one Bill Haley cover
song that was played when Neal Christian and the Crusaders were touring with
JP on guitar

JP had a fine reputation going by this time of playing " this firey sort
of fast stuff" to quote someone's account of JP from those days

about JP's boogie from WLL in TSRTS
there is this great drama that he creates
also, there is a particular rhythmic element that he bring to it that is
his own that just make it swing so damn much

for those players out there
if you can bring this sort of JP swing in to the opening lead line of
Black Dog for example
it would sound more authentic than getting the notes right

speaking of Black Dog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyD-fvpqirE

ok the first part of BD riff that launches the whole thing is somewhat of
a generic bass fill
but it's similarity to Little Things is amusing

who played on that session anyway?

okay then
thanks to everybody for there comments and research

next up:
discussing the opening to BIOH from RAH
that's Bring It On Home from the Royal Albert Hall on the official DVD for
those of you playing at home

stay tuned....................>

Steve,

Yes that is a very interesting run to play in the key of E maj, and it
creates a tension against the major tonality and is "out" but works for that
desired effect. That is some pretty quick picking to do on those heavy
strings of the day too - sounds like EVH owes more than a nod to Franny on
that
lead work too. That is not the same run as previously discussed from "Blue
Comet Blues" etc, but is another great early rock riff that is definitely
more "out there"!
