I believe you are talking about the gizmotron. It actually was a thingy that was fitted by or even maybe replaced the bridge and actually used rubber wheels to make the strings drone. I know there was a pretty extensive thread on that and Jimmy's gear not too long ago...somewhere I'll dig up the link that pointed to a whole article on the gizmotron and Jimmy's use of it... or someone's already beaten me to the punch as I am catching up on yesterday's todays emails bottom up! ; )

Remember the 80's Scottish rock band, Big Country? Their guitarist used one to get that bag pipe sound on some of their songs.

REM also did a great song using an e-bow called E-bow the Letter with Patty Smith on guest vocals.
