I agree on the WiC vocals. A couple of those tracks are downright painful to
listen to for the vocals, never mind anything else. Some of them sound like
they were recorded the morning after he finished a three-day bender (what a
drinking binge was called where I grew up).
However, any perfectionism Plant may exhibit now is in contrast to his Zeppelin
days. I recall reading interviews in a recording magazine around the time of
The Principle of Moments in which he mentioned being new to paying attention to
details in the recording of vocals and things like adding a "halo to vocals"
(as he called it), etc. He said that he left all that to Jimmy in Zeppelin and
spent his time posing or preening.
I believe the reputation for perfectionism was more from ex-musicians in his
solo groups. IIRC, a couple of them have said he was very demanding.
