George Harrison, Eric's close friend and confidant, did not share Eric's
distain for the band.
Some friend!!!!! Can you say Patti Boyd?!?!? snicker..
He spent time with the band and was the one who
pushed Jimmy into writing a ballad. The story goes that George and Jimmy
were together and George told Jimmy he should write a ballad. Jimmy was
reluctant at first so George told him to take the first few chords of
his song "Something" and see what he can do with it. The result was
Jimmy writing "The Rain Song". I cannot swear to the accuracy of this
but I would not at all be surprised if it is indeed true. After all, the
two songs do have some distinct similarities in the opening sequences.
I never heard that George told Page to take those chords but certainly
have heard that the opening chords were specifically a nod to George and
Something.
Time and time again Eric mentions in his book how upset he was at times
with how his music was overlooked or not accepted on the level he
thought it should be.
Nice ego. ; )
One cannot say this about Led Zeppelin's music.
Yes, overlooked perhaps by the media and their peers. But never
overlooked by the fans.
Amen brother!!!
