01- I really dig the remastered TSRTS soundtrack's
sound. The edits are what they are though. I never had
any problems with the previous edition's audio quality
but now that I've heard the remastered version, I
doubt I'll ever go back.
02- All that being said, it seems obvious that Page
either has complete audio for each MSG '73 show or
else very close to it. One wonders why he's bothering
with the "soundtrack" approach (esp since the edits
don't match the film anyway) rather than releasing a
'73 MSG boxed set or something with the original
performances sans edits. Personally, and not to sound
whiney, I would've much rather gotten that than a
remastered non-soundtrack. But hey, gift horses and
mouths or whatever.
03- Years ago, there were rumblings that most of the
P/P '98 US shows were video taped for a home video
release of some description (hence the two of 'em
wearing identical clothes each night). Obviously it
never happened so what exactly was the deal there?
04A- Perhaps fittingly (given the times in which we
live), I finally listened to the Live-Aid, Atlantic
40th and HOF reunion performances. I'd never checked
any of 'em out before. The HOF reunion I'll come back
to in a moment, but Live-Aid was even worse than I'd
been led to believe. I wonder that Thompson might've
done a better job if he hadn't constantly been
tripping over Collins. That wouldn't have saved the
overall performance, but at least the drums wouldn't
have been such a mess.
04B- Atlantic 40th was very good though. Sure, it's
not Zep circa 1972... but then, what is? For years,
everybody (Plant in particular) has been saying how
awful it was so I guess diminished expectations could
play a role here... on the other hand, the dire
warnings still couldn't prepare me for Live-Aid, so
there ya go. Anyway, I'd never heard Jason play before
but Atlantic's 40th actually sounded like Zeppelin. It
wasn't a fluke either, the same was true of the HOF
performance. If you compare that to the P&P shows of
the era you can hear the upgrade. JPJ and Jason
immediately and noticeably raised Jimmy and Robert's
game. Things went south dramatically once Michael Lee
(good drummer though he is) took over. Whatever
trepidation I might've harbored concerning the show
next month has been greatly alleviated. Atlantic 40th
made me a believer.
05A- Reunion. Honestly? I'd love to hear a '69 style
D&C. Comparatively stripped down (in terms of
runtime), fast and insane (in the middle part) and
generally old school. I dig the '73 and '75 versions,
sure, but there's a lot to be said for staying on
topic. Those latter songs? Cool though they are, "on
topic" ain't what I'd call 'em.
05B- Reunion. All but confirmed for the setlist so far
seem to HOTH, Custard Pie, NQ and Kashmir. WLL seems
like a safe assumption. Am I missing anything?
05C- Reunion. Have no fear, y'all. If the tapers could
beat Peter Grant back in the 70's, they can beat
anybody. But even if the tapers are somehow foiled,
nobody's gonna tell me this show won't be recorded for
posterity. No matter what, we'll get our hands on it.
It's all just a matter of how and when.
