An excellent review indeed, especially gained from such short samples.
I pre-ordered my copy; mostly because I'm a sap for things packaged
in the name of Zeppelin, Page, Plant, Jones...
However, now I'm actually looking forward to listening to the
difference rather than just putting the flashy new Zeppelin stuff on a
shelf.
I'm no audiophile - at least not approaching Mr. Thomson's level
anyway - but it always irked me when I would throw my Zeppelin CDs on
in friends' CD players and they complained that it wasn't as loud as
their more current music ("dude - this just SOUNDS OLD..." - et
cetera). I also had younger customers complain when I worked in the
home electronics department at Sears and I would use Zeppelin music to
demo the stereo equipment (they usually wanted hip-hop garbage where
all you can really make out is the rattle of whatever's not strapped
down). I think even then I had a primitive understanding that if you
make everything artificially loud, you lose the subtleties.
I am among that shameful group that actually has no record player... I
picked up a bunch of bootleg Zep vinyl when I passed through Durango,
Colorado a few years ago, but I've never been able to play them. At
some point, it will be time to invest in a good one, to enjoy those
LPs as well as these hopefully-forthcoming reissues of the studio
catalog.
It's unfortunate that Zeppelin seems to be moving the wrong direction
with their back catalog in the digital realm... releasing mp3s rather
than mastering the recordings for SACD or DVD-Audio.
