Yeah, I agree Jeremy. Nickelback is basically harmless, production rock
and roll, circa 2000+ - sorta the modern-day areana rock Foreigner or
Journey. These bands may be a bit cooler now (especially with our boy
Jason at the skins), but remember back in the late 70's, early 80's, it
many circles, it was distinctly uncool to like these guys (then again, I
remember being held in low regard for being a Zeppelin freak, but that's
another story). You won't find any more originality there than when
Foreigner was rehashing Bad Company riffs. I recall seeing Nickelback
perform on last year's Juno awards (Canadian equivalent of the Grammy's)
and thinking how ridiculous it looked when they came out and turned on
the flamethrowers throughout their whole song, thereby ruining any sense
of dramatics (that flame thrower on the big Whole Lotta Love climax
rocked! Our boys knew how to use the effect tastefully!)
I see Nickelback as one of those harmless mid-level bands (what was that
line from Almost Famous?). If I think back to my high school days, there
were tons of bands around like that: Molly Hatchett, Coney Hatch, April
Wine, BTO, Nazereth, etc., etc. Or hey, are they really any different
from, say, AC-DC, who've been making the same album over and over again
ever since Back In Black? There are likely some on the list who would
bristle at that suggestion and say, hey AC-DC rocks! Well, to some
youngsters out there, Nickelback rocks, the same way Journey did in 1982
or Boston way back when (well that first Boston album was a classic), or
Grand Funk Railroad, or Foghat. I mentioned the Nickeback comparison to
a colleague this morning who used to be a big Cranberries fan. He
mentioned that they did something similar at one point, just rewriting
some of their older songs.
Hey to quote Percy talking to Lisa Robinson back in the day, "It's not
that Led Zeppelin is number one, it's how much better we are than
whoever it is that's number two...."
