Sting has done pretty good since the Police, too,
except for the last couple of albums, but he, like
Plant, loves to experiment. There is a pledge drive
special with him doing some very old folk material
coming up soon on PBS--look for it on your area's next
pledge drive if you are a Sting fan....
:)
I personally love Sting's, Peter's, Phil's and
Robert's solo stuff as much as if not more than the
original material. Michael Jackson's, Justin
Timberlake's, Beyonce's, Don Henley's, Joan Jett's and
a few others come to mind. I think anyone who's had
platinum or multiplatinum albums, or even gold albums
in today's digital climate should be applauded as a
success, because it's just so darned tough to sell
anything but a download single.
Anyone who makes a living at music should be
considered a success, actually. It's only the top 5%
of musicians who get to that point. I'm just in the
next tier--the top 10% who break even. The other 90%
are in the red or do it just for fun. Robert is in
that top 1% --the ones who make an extremely good
living at music. Yeah, I'd call that success.
Look around at a few professional musician sites and
check the data if you like. Do your own Google
search. It's sad, but here in Austin, a fact of life,
and we are considered by many to be the "live music
capital of the world." It's much worse elsewhere,
probably the main reason Plant went to Nashville and
did an album with Krauss recently. It helps to be
flexible and make some money to keep your more serious
but perhaps not as lucrative pursuits going. Sorta
like how most of the musicians in Austin have a "day
job" to pay bills so they can still do studio work
(all I do anymore at nearly 48), or sell off extra
equipment to help pay bills (like Page did in the
early Zep days so they could keep going and save a few
quid in the meanwhile). You learn to not be
extravagant and be smart in your choices, so you can
keep going. Plant has been incredibly good at that,
which is why he's still recording.
Yeah, I'd say he's been a success....Zep was just a
mega-success. But then, so was Michael Jackson as
compared to the Jackson 5--it can happen. There are
rumors of Grammys and others with the new Krauss duet
bit....
