Yorke got the essence of the story correct, but he screwed up on a
couple very important details. First off, the Stones did not
contribute to the All-Stars tracks! They were brought in by Jimmy to
overdub the Clapton jams. When Andrew Oldham demanded that Jimmy
turn over the tapes, Jimmy reluctantly agreed but only on the
condition that he would be allowed to "spruce up" the songs by adding
overdubs of harmonica (Jagger), bass (Bill Wyman), piano (Ian
Stewart) and drums (possibly Charlie Watts).
Second, I am pretty sure that this actually happened *before* Clapton
left Immediate Records. The overdubs were done in the fall of 1965
but the Bluesbreakers didn't sign with Decca until late 1965 or early 1966.
Thirdly, none of these songs were actually released until mid-1968
when Immediate was desperate for money. (The label folded a year
later.) By that time Jimmy was long gone and had no control over
what Oldham was doing.
I still don't understand why Clapton was so ticked off. The jam with
Jimmy was no worse than some of the dozens of other sessions that
Clapton sat in on in the '60s.
