" The Johnny wieseman of the Plaza Hotel John Bonham!" ?????
Bro,
I'm guessing Plant's actually referring there to Johnny Weissmuller, the
actor best know for playing Tarzan in all those '30s and '40s movies (and a
well-known raving looney besides). Makes sense, don't it: Bonzo as the
"Tarzan of the Plaza"?
Plant, a truly witty guy as we all know, loved to make weird references in
his on-stage patter. From '77 L.A., of course: "...and doesn't know the man
they call Tim" is obviously a Monty Python reference. And I've always
thought that on 6/23/77 during "Nobody's Fault," Plant interjects not "What
an excuse!" (as Luis Rey has it), but "Excuuuuse me!" in reference to Steve
Martin's stand-up comedy routine. Martin's first album, "Let's Get Small,"
was a big hit in '77 and made "Excuse me!" an American catch-phrase that
summer, which I'm sure Plant would have picked up on.
Oh yeah: I also know the true origin of "Bless yer socks." But I consider
that an encore, so naturally it will cost extra.
