Re: Zep and Sabbath Played together?!?!?!

Well, well, well (the following stolen from Planet Zeppelin's lzepl 1969:)

found an interview with Bill Ward that mentions more but nothing about
a recording session:

Q:It has been said that the members of Led Zeppelin used to come
jamming with you during the early 70's. Is it true John Bonham broke
your drum kit ?

[Laugh] No, John Bonham didn't break my drum kit. I had a fear that he
would! [laugh] I had a very healthy fear of that possibly happening.
But I was touchy about my drums anyway, I didn't like anybody touching
them - especially Bonham! If he sat behind them, I didn't know how
they would come out.

I had known John Bonham since we were fifteen or sixteen years old and
we would often meet in the clubs. You know, we met a lot of musicians
in the clubs. John Bonham was busy in the bands he was in and had a
lot of work. We would just cross each other's path each week. They
would just be leaving a club to go to another club to do a gig and we
would be coming in to do a gig, whatever band I was in (at the time).
We all knew each other, I mean, the rest of the guys too, before we
were even Black Sabbath. Everybody knew each other. All the musicians
kind of hang out together at times... What I'm trying to say right now
is that I had seen John destroy a couple of kits or pretty much level
some kits to the ground in the early days when we were teenagers so...
But it never happened with my drum kit. John Bonham did play my drums,
but he never broke them. It was just my own fear that he might!
[laugh]

Q:Can you tell us more about your relationship with Led Zeppelin?

Well, we honestly respected the band. We'd known Robert Plant, of
course, about the same we knew John Bonham before Zeppelin. He was in
a band called The Band Of Joy for a long time. So, you know, it wasn't
unusual for us to see Robert around town. But when they first came out
and that first track came on the air, it was just absolutely
phenomenal.

We were going along in Sabbath, thinking that we were doing pretty
good and coming along pretty good. We [had] played a concert in
Carlisle (in Northern England) and somebody who was a fan of ours used
to let us sleep over night at his house. So we were resting there
after the concert at his house when he put on the Zeppelin album. We
all sat down and listened to it thinking, "Oh my God! What are these
guys doing?" [laugh] It was just like coming out of nowhere. Because
to that point, even though (The Who, you know...) there were some
heavy bands around, Cream had established a lot of new ways of playing
hard rock music and there were just a couple of bands there... But
when Zeppelin arrived, it was a whole new bargain. And when the first
Black Sabbath album came out about eight months later, it was like
there had been a change in popular music.

As far as the relationship goes, we've often crossed paths during our
career and we spent time with each other socially. We may have a
drink, go out, get high, go watch them play, check out their music...
Each of us as individual members of Black Sabbath would mingle with
the guys. I though the things were pretty OK with everybody.

this is from an interview with Tony Iommi:

TONY IOMMI INTERVIEW ON SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO - MAY 3RD AND 6TH
Apologies for the late notice, but I'm hoping someone manages to
record this either tonight or when it's rebroadcast on Friday. Thanks
to Blabbermouth.net for posting this and to Nero Kalem for the heads
up!

From Blabbermouth (May 2nd): In a head-to-head Sirius Satellite Radio
interview with "Sound of the Beast" author Ian Christie, BLACK SABBATH
guitarist Tony Iommi exclusively reveals this week that he has studio
tapes of BLACK SABBATH jamming with LED ZEPPELIN during the mid-1970s.

"BLACK SABBATH used to jam with LED ZEPPELIN all the time." reports
the Birmingham-born Iommi. " We'd be trying to rehearse and they'd
come interrupt us. I've got some tapes floating around the house."
During the exceptional in-depth session Iommi also reveals stories of
having John Bonham serve as best man at his raucous first wedding,
being chastised by Bill Ward's mom after setting her son on fire, his
early days playing Buddy Holly cover songs in the 1960s, receiving a
Gibson SG from Leslie West, and the desire to record new BLACK SABBATH
material.

The interview airs twice this week (Tuesday, May 3 at 9:00 p.m. EST
and Friday, May 6 at 1:00 p.m. EST) on Sirius "Hard Attack"/27's
weekly "Bloody Roots" heavy metal history lesson, hosted by Christe.
The show will also include rare SABBATH demo tracks, and two songs
from the upcoming Iommi solo album, "Fused".

Ah! So we finally have confirmation that there IS a tape of long
rumored Black Zeppelin jam! According to Dave Tangye & Graham Wright's
book (HOW BLACK WAS OUR SABBATH), this jam happened at Morgan Studios
during the recording of SABOTAGE. Earlier accounts had placed the jam
at The Record Plant in June '72 when Zeppelin was in town for a gig at
the L.A. Forum. Lets hope Tony provides enough insight for us to sort
this mystery out once and for all. I'm also curious about what these
rare demo tracks will be? Hmmm??

Yes, this one was very well done. Actually, Zeppelin loved to do stuff
in the key of E so a lot of songs could be mashed. Then there are a few
in the key of A. Plus both SIBLY and TFO are in G minor, so there are
possibilities there.

few years back (or more) of Whole Lotta Love with Pink Floyd's On The Run, and
that was pretty good too! I'm just wondring what else could be mashed that way...
