BOTM#9 part 1

You know this morning I literally woke up with the year 1972 in my head. Don't know why, but I guess I must've subconsciously been keeping track of the botm's I've done so far and the year '72 hasn't been touched yet. We know just how "on" Zep were in the US during that tour. Even Jimmy knew well enough to have a couple of evenings mutli tracked ; ) and we can thank him today, tomorrow and the next day by popping in How the West Was One and just digging it like dirt. So with that in mind, I decided to go to the opposite end of that tour ...so opposite I decided to pick one of the warm ups for the 1972 US tour. Yes I could've gone down under and did the 72 Aussie tour, but that outright deserves it's own series dedicated to that tour. So you know what lies ahead....

Instead, I settled on May 27th, 1972 "Amsterdam Warmup " ( Magnificent )

Oude R.A.I., Amsterdam Holland.

Sorry no image ...yet! But there is a clip of this on the DVD of mpeg clips I sent out and never saw returned to the list...oh well. : ( Maybe a screen capture offa that can make it's way onto the HOTH site.

Either way, just by checking out the setlist this outta be fun. Too bad nothing on this one yet from the newly recorded but far from being released HOTH album, but still a nice way to spend an early ( and extended!) lunch....

From the crowds reaction to the introduction you can tell the audience is verrrrry happy to have Zeppelin back in town. Plant tells the crowd "It's very nice to be back again...been a long time" And off they go into IS.... I can't help but picture the Aussie video from DVD as I listen. It's nice to have an image in your head of their looks at the time. Jimmy seems to have some equipment trouble as right during Valhalla I am coming he totally dissappears!!! Comes back and then Plant's voice looses it big time with second go round at the viking yell. Oooh, a rough start for Plant. Sound definately fluctuating as sounds like PA/sbd adjustment are being made. An interesting solo from Jimmy. Some new stuff being tried out as well as some familiar elements.

The crowd eats it up as they end that and quickly delve into Heartbreaker. Plant's voice comes in way hot and distorted but then gets quieted down. Yup, it's a warm up...group and techs alike. But for what's known as a warm up, someone forgot to tell Plant as he is doing a number on his voice... Page launches quickly into his run up & down the fretboard to a very responsive audience indeed. And then as he quiets down and goes into his hoedown the audience immediately clap along. He cranks up the volume and breaks his fingers with a furious run before quieting down again with Bouree and 59th st. Bridge song. Feeling Groovy baby! And in the following segment Page flies and almost seems to get ahead of himself at times. Wow some fast stuff there! Still can't touch Europe '73!

" I take it you're all well " "This is one off the fourth album...this is one dedicated to a member of the canine family who's about 19 years old. In England we have hunting dogs...we don't hunt anymore but this one but this one...It's called Black Dog"

Starts off with the OOT intro. Bonzo seems to have travelled off to a distant place as that's how his drums sound...Some timing problems with Plant rushing the lyrics a bit and a slight miscue by Page but still in good form. Plant is going for the high ones and not holding back at all. His voice seems to be tolerating it well though. And he's got the lyrics in order too. What a wail right before Jimmy starts his solo!!! Page's solo is a bit 'chunky'. I guess that's one way I can describe it.

"This is something a little slower, featuring John Paul Jones on piano...tuning noodlings...this is a song of love...it's called Since I've been loving you" " appreciative applause "Shhhhhhhh!" Page starts...applause returns! ; )

A rather tentative start by Page...well quiet at least... but he loosens up as he raises the volume. A loooonnngggg IIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii've from Plant sets the mood. Jones' piano sounds dry and "chunky" as well. Could stand a bit of chorus or a Leslie. Did JPJ use leslies? this one kinda plods along, but Plant certainly is trying hard to move it along. At about the 3:30 mark Jones switches to organ but then back to the piano as Page launches into his solo. Looks like Jones is trying out various aspects of his gear. A nice solo from Page but kinda killed with that dry piano. Page does a flub it seems, but then repeats it, making one of his trademark, " I MEANT to do that " cover ups! Plant is really giving it all and giving the PA a real run for its money. A very hearty attempt but not one of the best SIBLYs by far.

"This next song is dedicated to New York..and you might wonder why. If you have a strict knowledge of the English language it explains ....????? damn what did he say?!!? "This is called Celebration Day"

I still am wonder WHY dammit?!?!?!?!?!?

Sounds like a bit of a false start, but when Jimmy gets it together they go into one of the most frantic paced CD's you can image. I think they're all thrown off by the pace and mess up the first Chorus. Jones sounds like a machine gun!!! This one is on speed...And the pace seems to throw Robert off again as he continues singing "There's a train that leaves the station... over the start of Jimmy's solo. How Jimmy pulls that off impecably at this pace is astounding. The extended solo at the end is highly reminicent of TSRTS. I wonder if he was switching up between the 12 and six. Even with the flubs one of the most energetic CD's ever. Wow. A Page retunes quickly Plant goes

" This is something we're very proud of..it's called Stairway to Heaven"

just keep swimming just keep swimming.....
