The audience stays very quiet while awaiting the acoustic set, till
one guy lets loose with a whistle to which Plant replies "Patience" and
then I think kinda berates the fellow...something like "you should go to
the back...at least you have a seat....." He introduces Going to
California again to a small burst of applause....and you hear Jimmy
start in...
" can you hear the mandolin???? " Jimmy stops... "Can you hear a
mandolin running through that speaker ?" the audiences chimes back No!
You hear a mandolin chord and cheer goes up... great! As Jimmy starts
in again you hear Jonesy repeat that little chord as if just to make
sure he's still audible... they deliver a nice version with Plant's
voice still having a touch of distortion as his volume builds. He also
dosen't seem to be 'singing' this one as much as speaking it in parts.
That distortion kinda makes the mandolin sound sitar-ish at points.
"oh man it's so hard...terribly hard....so hard....so hard..." instead
of the ahahhhhhh ahahhhhhhs at the end.
"Written about a year or so ago in Wales...and it goes something like
this" and after a very quick tune up by Jimmy, you hear a rather unique
intro to That's the Way. This one is done nicely with Jimmy playing it
with a little more gusto than typically. Wish Joonesy's mandolin was a
little bit more up in the mix. And even though the nasty distortion is
at a minimum here, there's a metallic nature to Jimmy's guitar. Seems
like Jimmy gets unsure of what goes on at the 4 minute mark as he almost
seems to stop playing, but then picks it up again, adding some nice
little ecoutrements to the usual chord progression. No harmonies from
the fellows in this one : ( as the song nears the end you hear alot of
talk being picked up by the taper... but it's quickly drowned out by a
nice clear high Oooohhh from Plant to end the song. The audience sounds
like a washing machine!! Swishhhhh Swishhhhhh Swishhhhhhhh
And Jimmy must've switched guitars quick because before you know it
the audience is clapping as they recognize the strains of Tangerine. I
always loved the live versions of this....especially the acoustic takes
on the solo part. But this particular version seems to fall apart after
the solo bit and has this nasty shrill metalic screech marring it and it
also either is cut or Page just cut it short. oh well...
Bron-y-Aur Stomps gets the audience clapping along right from the
start. But it's not enough for Plant as he calls out after the first
lines " I can't hear ya!!" So they step it up...and still " LOUDER!!!"
I think he sidetracked himself as he flubs the next lyrics!!! HA!!
Ahhhh, live Zeppelin! Jimmy's bluegrass improv is short but contains
snatches of what almost sounds like slide playing thanks to the
mastering of this making it sound like bottles clinking... or is that
my lunch??? Some funny audience remarks can be picked up here and
there.... " That was a song about a dog...with blue eye" audience
member " heh, Hmmmmm"
And then as D& X starts I swear it sounds like someone going " Oh
Gawd..." The distortion on Plant's voice continues... a very very odd
section before the bow solo... certainly unique...an 8 minute bow
solo....kinda drawn out but does draw a polite round of applause at it's
conclusion... the fast paced section that follows is pure Page frenzy.
The run at 15:50 on is lightning fast followed by another totally unique
to this Dazed passage that reminds me an awful lot of a sessions outtake
that I just can't put my finger on but the wah passage is Pure Shaft
and I'm expecting Isaac Hayes to appear... That Shaft is a bad ...shut
your mouth!!! heh heh...I do a "rewind" on that several times... this
is one out there Dazed as I swear Jonesy and Bonzo get into the Crunge
right before the guitar and vocal duel and back to the Page Express....
another unique moment at 21:46 with Page doing this ascending scale that
is duplicated by first Jonesy and then Plant. A guitar, bass and vocal
workshop!!! It's chaotic disjointed but impressive. And luckily the
sound is pretty good throughout. Holy shit, the Page pyrotechnics just
don't cease on this one!!! It's almost a letdown when they return to the
main theme. You know , there's even a tape warble towards the end in
what I refer to as the Hendrix visitation that just seems to fit right
in! Certainly one of the most unique Dazeds out there. I wonder what mr
" Aw Gawd" thinks now ?
They don't give the audience much time to think about it thought and
go into a kinda uptempo WIAWSNB. Plant's voice has benefitted from the
rest it got during the previous number as he attacks this one with
renewed vigor. Hmmm Dazed = Vocal Viagra ;) Again the sound remains
pretty stable on this one..at least not any worse than the bulk of this one.
" I ball like Hell...YEs, I like a good thing!!!" Nice version. short tight
This has got to be a first... people in the audience start shouting
Rock 'n Roll ...Rock 'n roll!! Plant goes " Rock 'n Roll??" and then
must've shrugged his shoulder ok caus eht eaudience cheers wildly and
Bonzo get's it going, and I don't know if on purpose but Page seems to
start in early and then gets into the meat of it..and they're rocking it
out. Page goes into his solo doing great and then..WTF?!?!?!? As he's
getting to the end of it he justs fades out, Bonzo and Jonesy stop
?!?!?!?!?!?!? Plant continues singing...and suddenly Bonzo and Page
Jones all join back in to finish it off!!! Now if that ain't a pisser I
don't know what is. The audience certainly thinks so.
OK, now I'm perplexed as hell, 'cause as I'm reaching to switch cd's as
the track listing shows cd 2 ending with Rock 'n Roll and that faded out
I suddenly hear someone go " Now this is a piece we wrote on the bus on
the way here..." and not sure what the hell it is at first, but it
eventually becomes an instrumental Black Dog... I am as surprised as I
am confused and bewildered and WTF?!?!?!?!?!!! I wish I could remember
who I traded with for this?!?! Did they sneak this track on and who is
it ? It's a pretty cool version too I must add. I will have to rip it
and mp3 it up on somewhere... Sunnnava?!?!?
