Either the PA is doing it or it's the natural echo being picked up by
the recorder, but the first notes of JPJ's bass just rrrrrrooooolllllll
slowly at you and make you wanna close your eyes and nod off, but then
Jimmy's wahhed harmonics tell you, no way. This one was started off
verry slow. Maybe JPJ hoping the faster bits won't be just as fast as
the torrential '71 workouts and he'll have an arm left...Not if Bonzo
has his way!!! Plants heavily echoed voice trails off in a cascade of
mournful whoa's I don't recall hearing in other versions lending a real
cool beginning to the fast part that just keeps building in intesity
that shortly evolves into the now familiar Achilles riff/San Francisco.
This Dazed has a real spookiness to it.
So now we have Spook Rock !
Also a great Public golf course if I say so myself...but I digress...
Jimmy's bow solo echoes and roars and the volume fluctuates as the
sounds come and go at the taper with the banging of the strings... Too
damn bad this ain't in stereo. The bow solo dosen't overstay it's
welcome and they launch into the fast pace again with Page and Plant
sticking the high notes. What a battle!!"Push Push!!" frenzy ensues but
somehow Bonzo is keenly listening to Page as they magically coming to a
stop with drop dead percision...then frig it a cut!!! Man that was
getting heavy I wish I heard the rest..it returns with what sounds like
Bonzo doing the crunge beat and then wait a second, it sounds like a
little jazz groove just before they stop again and Page Plant go into
their bada bah da and guitar duel onslaught. There's some mad moments in
the fury with mistakes being turned into "I meant that" ; ) and
eventually we return to the descending bass line, Plant makes love 25
times, Hendrix visits, Bonzo amazes and whew it's over.
Nothing's said for some time save for hearing a "Shhhh" from Plant
obviously and then very quietly you hear Stairway starting. The audience
starts applauding but quickly die down as if they know by now...you shut
the %^&* up for this one and listen. Plant starts it off rather
tentatively sounding almost shy about it, but just as the song builds so
does his voice. Some very nice aha aha aha aha's thrown in and I am
almost hearing Does anyone remeber ...but it's not there Yet! Plant's ad
libbing a bit more after Bonzo joins the fold and the solo starts off
very deliberate sounding at first, but soon Page loses that and it
becomes more fluid as Jonesy and Bonzo do their sympatico thing. It's
not a long one and as Plant comes back you could tell his voice is tired
so after the first line of And As We wind on down the road he has to
take it down a notch. It ends nicely but to a pretty subdued sounding
audience response as opposed to some other numbers.
Sounds like Plant tries to get the crowd going with some sorta chant
and Bonzo joining in with a marching band beat.... they give up quick!
And Jimmy gives us a tease of , and then a whole dose of WLL!!! Hey I
can hear Jimmy sing!!! Robert let's it all out with a LLlooove as they
do a quick shred snippet of The Crunge before Jimmy goes nuts with the
theramin. With a furious drum roll I am expecting the solo to come but
instead they launch into Everybody needs somebody to Love first and then
sudden;y Bonzo's boom boom and 'the solo'!!!! Another verse of WLL and
boogi boogie woogie booogie mama! Sounding similar to to permanently
ingrained TSRTS soundtrak version I am expecting "Shake one time for
Elvis".. none of that, but Jimmy's pyrotechnics are there...Plant tries
to intervene it seems but Jimmy plays on, but then relinquishes and they
do go into Plant's request, Baby I don't Care. Amazing how they can just
pull a tune out of thin air. So why not launch into Let's have a
Party?!?! Sounds like it's over, but Plant starts things up again with I
can't quit you baby....but it's far from the album version. Sounds more
like a swing version in places, but Page even after this far into the
show is just blazing.
Wasn't paying attention as I was just mesmerizes by Pages fury, but it's
metamorphed into Lemon squeezing time. Page seems to try to get Robert
to try to hit some higher notes but Plant won't take the bait heh heh He
loses that last 'Love' and the echo takes up the slack. Can't blame the
guy, from the start he was pushing it. I wouldn't be able to talk after
two+ hours let alone belt out a wail. The battle finally comes to an
end and the crowd won't let up now....
So let's break their hearts with Heartbreaker. It's changed from the
early days of blasting into the solo to moments of hesitation followed
by totally shocking fluries of speed. Bouree's still included, actually
longer than most...and then followed up with a strange disjointed chord
and a st st st stuttering lead back into the band joining in and sheer
mayhem. This is Page at the top of his game. To bad there's a slight cut
but the interplay between Bonzo and Page is there. Heartbreaker your
time has come. I don't think it was ever as intense as Europe '73
Sturm und Drang ... Storm and Stress.....how fitting.
