I find this quite disturbing especially as we've all seen the pictures of Page openly buying boots in Japan.

According to what appear to well-informed posts on the Royal-Orleans discussion board, which includes a lengthy transcript (or at least first-hand account; I don't know if it's a verbatim) of Pagey's testimony, he didn't "openly buy" any of those boots. He helped himself to hundreds of them in that one store, and the owners weren't about to stop him. "The Japanese are extremely polite people," he was reported to have said. :-)

I can see where some observers would see some hypocrisy on Jimmy's part when it comes to this issue, and the defense team did pursue a line of questioning that implied he was complicit in some bootleg releases, including a latter-day performance that was intermittently filmed by his daughter Scarlet and then found its way onto the boot market, allegedly through Ross Halfin.

Make of it all what you will... There is also the counter-argument that since he was the victim of the theft of several tapes from his home at one point, which all ended up being released as Japanese bootlegs, he was only trying to get back copies of recordings that are rightfully his!
