It was also nicknamed "The Fretless Wonder" because of its low flat frets,
making it feel like there were no frets when playing. (or something like that).

Also...Couldn't he have bought a new one?  I know Gibson didn't just make one! 
And anybody could have chucked that trem on it.Hmmm
