After reviewing the pics...I had a few questions/thoughts.
I don't think that the reel-to-reel is on / behind Page's setup, I think
that is Jones' equipment - those are his amps and the organ to the side.
I think Page just happens to be standing over there in the pics...if you
look at pic #5 you'll see the cord from Page's guitar going down to the
pedal just to the right of Plant and then out of the right side of the
pic toward where I assume his set up would be.
So if Page's gear is to stage right - why would the "tape delay" unit be
with Jones' equipment?
Possibly more support for them taping the gig...

I'm tending to agree... and I'll go even further and say it was a
reel-to-reel deck recording the gig. Sure, there's a lot of wishful
thinking behind my opinion, but I'm going to try to make a serious case
here; see below. Man, I love this trainspotting stuff.
