Hi Oner and everyone.....
This is an interesting topic.....I definately do agree with you that
Sabbath were definately the first true "heavy metal" band. When I was a
kid, first getting into ZSeppelin, I thought Zeppelin was.....and then I
heard their variety and realized then, there were a lot of slow "crappy"
songs that were lame to me and I realized they weren't really even a rock
band. Of course since then I have grown to appreciate (for a long time
now) the music they put out and some of the songs I disiked are now
favorites. But, I listened to songs like "Communication", WLL, Wearing and
Tearing (especially the end part...despite the fact that the song was
recorded in 1978.....actually on this DAY in 1978, 11-21) and saw how
these songs really laid the foundation for Heavy Metal.
However, there are other songs before teh days of Zeppelin that I think
also helped build the foundations for metal. For example, "Love me Tender"
Seriously though, how about Cream's "Crossroads" and even "White Room" and
"Tales" (both the same song really)...or Jefferson Airplane's "House at
Pooneil Corners" (primitive psychadellic death metal in my opinion).
Andeven some of the Jimmy-era YB stuff has the makings of metal (after
all.....that's what evolved into early Zeppelin technically). And you
can't forget "In-a-gadda-da-vida" which I beleive is from 68?
While Jimmy and Zep were instrumental in heping the sound develop, I don't
really cfonsider them the ones who really started music in that direction.
Sabbath figured out how to make a living with it. I love that muddy tone
Iommi has......and you won't find any engineer even allowing a tone like
that in this modern digital age......
