Here you go with the unauthorized transcript of the concert review, from
Helsinki 1970... Apologies for any mistakes in the translation, you get the
idea I guess. The reviewer used quite annoying, even stupid language in the
original article and my intention was not to make you feel like he wrote a
clever review.
Cheers

This from ?Suosikki? magazine, issue 3/1970
A concert review for Led Zeppelin at Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki, Finland on
Monday, 23rd February 1970.
Julius Heikkilä reviews Led Zeppelin:
Noble is their name, but so was their performance!
The unbelievable concert series in our arctic conditions seems unbroken: our
daring pop promoter, prophet Mohammed Heinonen reaches out for ever higher
and this time caught Led Zeppelin.
The concert series has so far been extremely interesting and provides our
native musicians a radically concrete view of the stupendously high quality
of the British beat.
Perhaps for the first time during my career as a critic I intensively made
notes of the proceedings and came up with the following: Zeppelin used a
loud overall volume level, courtesy of their massive equipment. To balance
this, they masterfully used nuances, especially during slower tempos. As a
lead vocalist Robert Plant proved to be both skillful and personal. On the
other hand, when he ?trilled? with lips close to the microphone, the whole
sound broke. Even worse, sometime the whole vocalling blurred because of
this. His upper range was clear and appeared easily (someone even called him
an eunuch) and a special feature in his performance was the use of his
throat as an instrument. Guitarist Jimmy Page and Plant often collaborated
by imitating each other?s solos. The guitarist clearly was the center figure
and the soul of the group. He also astounded me more than anyone in a long
time by playing the guitar with a bow. The whole situation seemed totally
absurd: a guitar that is played with a cello bow and that sounds like an
upright bass? This was clearer to me further to the concert when I noticed
other sound effects that were unexplained, for example a harmonica without a
visible player. Apparently the sounds were pre-recorded and Jimmy Page?s bow
episode was just an act.
The youngest member of the group, percussionist John Bonham caught my
attention especially for his beautiful drum sound. His efforts can be best
described as furious. This does not, however, mean anarchy in drumming, but
rather is a description of his emotional attitude. The best thing about his
playing, in addition to the excellent beat, was his precise timing and an
extremely individual style of backing. When an average drummer play ?tat tat
tata?, this intellectual blasted off with his extraordinary, WELL-SOUNDING
patterns.
For his selection of instruments, John Paul Jones, who used two instruments
and two first names, shall be called an instrumental rarity. He put the
finishing touch to Zeppelin. As an organist on notes ? in addition to
precise footwork ? his imaginary background playing. As a bass player his
technical skills are most notable.
Led Zeppelin perform self-composed material in concerts, which in the
primitive level resembles Ten Years After a lot. (my note! Ten Years After
visited Finland about three months prior to Zeppelin.. one of the concerts
in the concert series.) The songs mostly consist of several sections, with
songs usually being performed non-stop to make the ?feel? on the concert
fast-paced. And indeed, the audience occasionally reacted to this pace. Part
of this effect was due to the liveliness of their act, even if Ian
Anderson?s pace was not reached.
A close relative to the zeppelin inventor, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, is about
to sue these big-haired boys.. for the misuse and the ruining of the family
name. I hope that the person in question notices in time how these popstars
more beautify than ruin the reputation of this noble name.
In the magazine, a review was found for the Whole Lotta Love single
(reviewer Pentti Kemppainen):
6/6 points
As this magazines comes out, Led Zeppelin have visited our country and have
finally been experienced. On the basis of this single it seems that a
mind-explosive concert is to be expected. The record, as all their other
stuff, promises the most incredible. This is the fiercest, hardest, most
skillful and most compelling stuff in the rock genre. Wild. Finnish
musicians really should learn themselves about the recording technique of
this record.
