Hi Wynn,
There are a couple of add-in DirectX filters you can install on your
system to play Flac files using apps such as Windows Media Player.
There's one called CoreFlac but I had problems with it. Another one that
seems to work flawlessly is available at http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/.
HOWEVER.....
I would highly recommend you instead check out a player called Foobar
2000. It's not quite as sexy as many other media players (although it is
possible to add-on skins, etc.) but it's one of the most powerful and
useful software players out there. Plus, it's free and it supports flac
and other lossless audio formats without add-ons. You can download it at
www.foobar2000.org. There are tons of free add-ons you can install that
allow you to do a number of things. I use it to resample files (with an
SSRC add-on for high quality), convert files, create MP3s, write gapless
audio CDs--lots of things. It also has built-in Replaygain support. This
is a method for ensuring all your audio files play at more or less the
same perceived loudness level and is far more advanced and less
destructive than something called "normalizing." I use Replaygain all
the time now and find it works very well.
I really can't speak highly enough about Foobar2K. Comparing it to other
players is like comparing Zeppelin to the Bay City Rollers. ;) There's
an active forum community supporting it at hydrogenaudio.org as well.
Enjoy,
Steve.
