My first Zep

Let's see... My first Zeppelin experience was having LZ I and LZ IV on 1 90
tape that was copied. I don't remember where I got the tape from. I think
one of my friends had them and copied them both for me... not really
sure.... BUT After I got my first CD player I had enough $$$ for 2 CD's I
got 2 CD's, The first was LZ I. The second I can't remember... it might have
been the doors, or the wall, it even might have been an REM CD.. (yeah... I
know)... BUT LZ I will always have a place in my heart.

I can remember being in high school 90-94 and maybe even in 8th grade listen
to Zeppelin on tape. Hell... It might have even started in 7th grade. But
Sometime early HS is when I got my CD player...

I can remember listening to the radio and liking certain songs... turned out
many of them were Zep.... and when asked if I knew Zep I wouldn't be sure,
but they would name off tunes and sure enough... I knew em.. The funny thing
was I didn't know who did a lot of the Zep stuff until I was told, because
it was so varied. I mean how was I supposed to know that, No Quarter, Fool
In the Rain, Rock and Roll, and Battle of Evermore were all the same band...
not to mention the countless other songs that vary entirely from these....

Then it started to happen.... even way into my mid 20s Hearing Zep riffs in
other songs like the Beastie Boys...

I remember one day in high school, we had this TV thing at the end of the
day called Channel 1... I don't remember it ever really being educational or
useful, but one day they were talking all about something and they had Babe
I'm Gonna Leave You in the background. I my ears locked on to it. I was like
"Are they playing Zeppelin??... Hey that's Babe I'm gonna leave you!! This
is one of my favorite songs!!!" Everyone just looked at me... but at the end
of the segment the kid paid tribute to Zep and noted the song and how
awesome it was. Everyone just looked at me in the class and wondered how I
knew that. :) Even people who listen to zep only knew the radio hits... The
4 disk box set came out at about the same time so a lot of people were
saying "Led Zeppelin... is BACK" (Some of you will remember the
advertisement.. with Jimmy and his bow..)

Now I am noticing of how much LZ "borrowed" for their first CD. I don't
care. I often think of how bad ass this CD is for a first CD. They did
borrow a lot. I am listening to a lot of older blues these days.... more
like what THEY were listening to... and see where they got a lot of material
from. BUT IT STILL KICKS ASS... Take some crusty blues; throw in one Les
Paul; 4 bad ass, dynamic musicians; add cocaine, heroin, Quaaludes, and
other misc drugs to taste; and add a little bit of Britain, let it simmer
and OH MY.... we have seem to have a legendary rock band... Great stuff!

My uncle, who is in his mid 40s, always asks me who my favorite bands are
and at the top of the list is always Zeppelin... he just rolls his eyes.
He's always telling me to screw the old stuff and listen to the NEW stuff...
"THE NEW STUFF is where it's AT. THAT stuff is old." bla bla bla.... This is
music he grew up with for Pete's sake and he's telling me to listen to the
crap they put out now??? Maybe some Gov't Mule, or Audio Slave, Alice in
Chains and GNR back in the day, but he's out of his mind. He's not true to
his roots and I think he's having a mid life crisis... no, I know he's
having one..... but hey..... that sort of sh*t happens... It's funny, his
wife once scolded me for buying the 4 disk box set in high school, saying I
should have put the money to college. F**k that and F**k her. I still listen
to Led Zep. But he finally sh*t canned her.

I can still put in LZ I, and as I listen to JP my pulse will start to race
and I'll get pumped up... really pumped up... The music can actually act
like a drug on me.... nuts!!

Keep Rock'n
